Derek Panfil

After spending time with Bain and Company out of school, Derek had the opportunity to work for PetSmart in their “services” division. “Services” in the pet world, is actually things like dog grooming, dog training, and yes boarding.

After helping grow that business at over a 30% CAGR for four years, he was given the chance to learn merchandising from both a true merchant role but also through leading functions like pricing and space planning. From implementation of SAP, Khimetrics, JDA space planning, Manhattan, and so on, Derek has had the opportunity to be involved with many system implementation projects aimed at creating a more customer centric company.

In 2007, Derek moved from retail to the service industry in taking a role with PF Chang’s and Pei Wei. Here, Derek was able to help the organization focus on the end consumer through market segmentation research and ultimately action plans set against these consumer profiles….but he couldn’t resist getting back into the pet industry and came back to it via Pet Supplies Plus in 2010. While at PSP, Derek has had the chance to be involved with what is affectionately known as a $500M start-up. From implementing a new ERP system to starting up a Private Brand program from scratch, Derek and his team are working hard to help PSP achieve its vision of becoming America’s Favorite Neighborhood Pet Store.

Derek is a pet parent to four rescue dogs that range in size from 4-70lbs.
